Miltenberg

 Monday, December 5

I woke up and opened our drapes and was met with a brick wall!  Well, stone, anyway. We were in a very deep lock on our approach to Miltenberg, and had I opened the door, I could touch the wall, and perhaps climb the ladder! It was neat to watch as the boat rose with the water gushing in, and the wall descend, until we were once again above the land line. Having no morning excursions planned, and in fact more sailing until we reached our destination, Clem brought coffee to our room and we had a leisurely morning watching the world go by. After a late breakfast, we watched a highly entertaining glass blower demonstrate his skills, born of 4 generations of glass blowers. He was as entertaining as he was skilled and we laughed and enjoyed his stories in addition to watching the demonstration.

In the late afternoon we docked and went on a walking tour of Miltenberg, the Franconian town on the Main River, nestled among Germany’s wine producing regions. With its cobblestone streets and timber framed houses and crooked lanes, it feels quite medieval, with the 13 th century Miltenberg  Castle dominating the scenery.

Amusing fountain, minus the water as it is winter.  Can only imagine!

Susan and I spotted some lovely big fuzzy scarves, and each bought one to help keep our necks and faces warm!  Each day has gotten progressively colder, and light snow was in the forecast for today, and we are bundling up!  We had some free time to walk around before making our way back, and since it gets dark so early, we were able to really enjoy the Christmas lights, especially in the town square.
